Application of UWB radar for human respiration monitoring

Mindaugas Tumalskis

Abstract

The paper investigates capability of ultra-wideband radar (NVA-R631) to register a respiratory signal without any contact with a human for sleep apnea monitoring. The algorithm designed to extract respiratory signal from the radar signal is presented. Respiratory signal acquired by the radar is compared with respiratory signal acquired by the reference method. Results show that the radar can record and track human breath with the correlation coefficient of 0.9 and absolute error of 0.5 mHz. The main problem of such approach is correct detection of human in movement and small breathing signal amplitudes in certain poses.
