Research of human perception of spatial sound direction

Inga Kilinskaitė

Abstract

This research presents human ability to localise sound source direction using personalised and not personalised HRIR data during synthesis of binaural sound. Not personalized data from IRCAM database was used and the personalized was registered individually for 10 participants, where 2 of them were blind. Then binaural sound was created using single tone, two tones and sweep signals. Test results show that personalised data helps to localise arrived sound direction  better than use of not personalised data. That means personalised HRIR data could be used for navigation technologies with acoustical maps as more informative alternative. Also it was found out, that sound tones with higher frequency are more suitable for indicating signal due the less direction error.
