A Brief Review of Accelerometry and Heart Rate Measurements Based Physical Activity Monitoring

Dainius Stankevičius, Vaidotas Marozas

Abstract

Decreasing levels of physical activity and increasing levels of obesity show that there still is a need for objective long term physical activity monitoring. This paper briefly reviews the concept of such type of monitoring using accelerometry and heart rate measurements. Methods of sensor placement and movement classification are first introduced. Energy expenditure estimation, heart rate measurements and combination of data from various sensors are also reviewed. Finally this paper compares some of existing commercial products.
